Our History
The Creston Golf Club was founded in 1954, when a group of local citizens formed a society, and purchased 100 acres of previously logged Crown land for $265. Alan Staples, the first president said, “That may not sound like much, but we had a hell of a time raising the money”. That about sums up the gradual development of the Creston Club, heavy on volunteerism, with much support from the community; accomplishing minor miracles with local ingenuity and limited resources.
Local engineer Vaughan Mosher donated his time to design the original course and many volunteers helped build 9 holes, carved out of the bush, with sand greens, completely ready for play in 1962.
It was a parched affair, with rock hard clay fairways (and lots of real rocks) until, in 1960, the Club built a reservoir to catch overflow water from the Lister Water Works. The remains of that reservoir can be seen on the left side of #11 (#3 in the original design). Local teens of the day recall skinny dipping in the shallow warm water on hot August afternoons, when no one was about.
Grass greens were built in 1970-71. Holes #2,3,7,15,&16 still play on these original grass greens.
In 1982 the new clubhouse was built with 95% volunteer labor.
A professionally designed expansion to 18 holes happened in 1989-91, with a further re-design of holes #8 and #9 in 2006.
After many previous attempts to secure an adequate water supply, a major new system to the Goat River was completed in 2003, again with a great deal of local expertise and volunteer help.
As a visitor you may look forward to improvements every time you come to play.
